The old bull ring, being converted to a concert hall

Miro statue, Woman and Bird

We went to the Plaza España, one of the biggest traffic circles in Europe. From there we walked over to the Miró park to look at his sculpture, Woman and Bird. We also passed the old bullfighting ring, which is being converted to a general arena, since the city of Barcelona has outlawed bullfighting. From the Plaza we then walked up and explored the Montjuic hill. We passed a series of buildings built for the International Exposition in 1929 and now housing convention centers. There are escalators, staircases, and fountains all the way to the top of the 600 ft hill, where there are views to the ocean and out over the city. The top of the hill houses the Olympic facilities from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. We looked at the Calatrava-designed communication tower and the multimedia Olympic Museum.

Then we went to the Miró museum to look at a large collection of his paintings, sketches, sculptures, and other creations. We walked by a large series of parks and gardens to the end of the hill, where a gondola takes you down to the World Trade Center and port area.

Once we reached the port area, we had lunch, people-watched at the beach, and walked down the boardwalk to the giant fish sculpture designed by Frank Gehry. We also went to the Maritime Museum, but it was mostly closed for renovations so we only saw a couple of rooms and one ship. Then we stopped for a drink on the Rambla and watched the street performers.
